Research has shown that 'baby wearing' enhances the parent-infant bond and reduces crying and fussiness. It also has a calming effect on the infant and helps promote feelings of closeness and security. Indeed, baby wearing has been identified as a key factor in the healthy physical, intellectual and social development of infants.
From a parental perspective, 'baby wearing' also has its benefits. Baby slings allow for discreet breastfeeding in public and provide an opportunity for parents to have both hands free while keeping their baby close. The heightened parent-infant bond means parents are more-attuned to their infant's cues and therefore more likely to anticipate their needs and moods.
